Freedom of Information Day is celebrated on 16 th March. This day is dedicated to that very concept, with the Freedom of Information Act being enacted on July 4th, 1966 and coming into effect a year from that date. It declared that every person has the right to get information to federal agency records that are not protected by one of nine exemptions, or special law enforcement record exclusions. This put into law the very concepts that James Madison had held so dear, and ensured that the citizens of the United States were able to obtain that information to which they were entitled.

Цей день присвячений саме цій концепції, оскільки Закон про свободу інформації був прийнятий 4 липня 1966 року і набув чинності через рік після цієї дати. У ньому проголошено, що кожна особа має право отримати інформацію для записів федерального агентства, яка не захищена одним із дев’яти винятків або спеціальними винятками для записів правоохоронних органів. Це запровадило в закон саме ті концепції, які так любив Джеймс Медісон, і забезпечило громадянам Сполучених Штатів можливість отримати ту інформацію, на яку вони мали право.
